Notes:
The identity of Psychotria mesentericarpa is problematic, because the five collections on which it was based represent more than one species. Bremekamp (1963) noted that of these, Baron 1240 clearly represents Psychotria reducta; Baron 851 and Baron 2995 clearly represent Psychotria parkeri; and the other two specimens are not in good enough condition for complete identification. Davis et al. (2007, p. 259) noted all this, and then without explanation of the reason for their choice they lectotypified the name Psychotria mesentericarpa on one of these last two specimens, Baron 2969. They analyzed its morphololgy and concluded that this specimen potentially represents a third species but this cannot be confirmed, because the specimen cannot be conclusively identified at this time. Davis et al. noted that Bremekamp suggested in an annotation that this lectotype specimen might be conspecific with Psychotria boenyana but was not sure, and that further study might be able to fix its identity.
