Notes:
This species is characterized by its small, deciduous, bidentate stipules; thin-textured, elliptic-oblong,rather well developed leaves with numerous secondary veins; somewhat short corymbiform inflorescences with the flowers subsessile and the peduncle costate; small corollas; and small ellipsoid fruits. This name was published with the spelling "augagneuri", but correctly takes the genitive ending "-ii" (ICBN Rec. 60C.1.b). This species is similar to Psychotria perrieri, and seems to have been generally overlooked. Psychotria perrieri has leaves of more leathery texture with the fewer secondary veins visible but only weakly raised and the peduncles generally smooth. Psychotria augagneurii has been collected mainly (if not entirely) in littoral forest, and seems to be a well marked species that is rather widely distributed but not common in any particular locality. Psychotria augagneurii is also similar to Psychotria decaryi, which is here distinguished by its generally smaller leaves with fewer secondary veins and its range mostly further south. However a few specimens are intermediate, with leaves of both forms (e.g., De Block et al. 2000).
