Notes:
This species is characterized by its elliptic, shiny leaves with the venation thinly raised on both surfaces, deeply bilobed stipules, terminal lax cymose inflorescences, small calyx limb, and corolla with the tube ca. 4 mm long. It was included by Bremekamp (1963) in his circumscription of Psychotria based on its seeds with a central longitudinal furrow with a median ridge. Bremekamp characterized this species in part by relatively large inflorescences, but additional specimens that seem to match this species have smaller inflorescences and there apparently is more variation in this feature than Bremekamp saw. The type appears to have been collected in the Ivakoany Massif on the Fianarantsoa-Toliara border region with no exact locality data, so both provinces are coded here.
