Notes:
This species is characterized by its medium-sized generally elliptic leaves wtih the venation mostly not visible, its deeply bilobed stipules, its pedunculate rather congested cymose inflorescences with the flowers subsessile, and its small calyx limb with the well developed, narrow lobes ligulate to triangular and sometimes becoming recurved. This species was included by Bremekamp (1963) in his circumscription of Psychotria based on its seeds with a central longitudinal furrow with a median ridge. In general aspect and its tipules Psychotria magnisepala is similar to species of Trigonopyren, and also overall is similar to Psychotria subcapitata with shorter calyx lobes and a distribution in central eastern Madagascar. Bremekamp considered it related to Psychotria enanilihensis, which is also found in the same general region and both of which have narrow recuved calyx lobes; Psychotria enanilihensis has calyx lobes ca. 1.5-2.5 mm long vs. 0.8-1 mm long in Psychotria magnisepala. Modern collections included in this species have a shorter tubular portion on the calyx limb and more slender peduncles and inflorescence axes, but match the details of Psychotria magnisepala including in their seeds with the characteristic adaxial bisulcate furrow of Bremekamp's Psychotria (e.g., Schatz 2668).
