Notes:
This is the most commonly collected species of Psychotria with bacterial nodules in the leaves in Madagascar. It is characterized by its robust habit (robust among the nodulated Psychotria species), its well developed winged peduncle, and its pyramidal cymose inflorescence that is generally pendulous. The nodules are rather large and well spaced; they are different from the nodules that are considered reticulate, but these nodules are irregular to lobed or branched in shape. Some specimens from the Manongarivo region have been included in sched. in Psychotria lokohensis, but appear to be a distinct taxon; these correspond to Psychotria sp. 14 of Gautier et al. (2002). Leaf size and shape, peduncle length, and perhaps corolla size are variable.
