Remijia chelamophylla is characterized by its notably robust habit, with quite stout hollow stems and large leaf blades, stipules, inflorescences, and capsules, robust flowers, and verticillate leaves that are subsessile to shortly petiolate and velutinous to tomentose on the lower surface. It is similar to Remijia pacimonica, with bullate leaves; to Remijia ulei, with appressed pubescence on the lower leaf surface; and to Remijia macrophylla. The differences between Remijia chelamophylla and Remijia macrophylla are not entirely clear, and these species were not compared in the protologue of Remijia chelamophylla; their types differ a bit in capsule size and the types are from well separated areas, but these probably deserve re-evaluation as to their separation. Remijia chelamophylla is also similar to some species of Pentagonia, which can be recognized by their striate leaf surface.
