Annual, erect herb, 8-20 cm long, subtrichotomously branched, whole plant glabrous except bracts; branchlets filiform. Leaves generally in 6-whorls, sessile, 1-nerved, membranous, minutely scabridulous at margins, 8-16 x 1.5-2.5 mm, elliptic, spathulate or spathulate-linear. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, 5-9-flowered heads; peduncles setose. Bracts leafy, unequal, setose, longer than flowers. Flowers pale or whitish, red, 2-4 (-5) mm long. Corolla-tube infundibuliform, c. 2.5 mm long; lobes ovate, c. 1 mm long. Mericarps subglobose, c. 1.25 mm in diameter, with persistent setose bracts.
