Notes: This species is characterized within Rosenbergiodendron by its habit with usually well developed short-shoot growth, medium-sized to somewhat small leaves, and medium-sized flowers and fruits. It is quite variable in leaf, flower, and fruit size, and sometimes subtle to separate from Rosenbergiodendron densiflorum. Two varieties have been separated, which are not striking different morphologically but have allopatric ranges. Steyermark (1972) included Brazil in the range of this species (as Randia formosa var. formosa, but did not cite any individual specimens. Several specimens from Tobago appear to represent this species, and that was included in the range given by Steyermark but was not acceepted by Gustafsson (1998). It seems possible that this showy species may sometimes be cultivated, although no direct reports have been seen.
Distribution: Seasonal and humid forest, apparently on various substrates and often on riversides, at 0-250 m in southern Central America (Panama) to northwestern South America (Colombia, Ecuador) andnortheastern South America (Venezuela, Tobago).
