Notes:
This species is characterized by its dense villous pubescence, thin-textured petiolate leaves, flowers borne in subsessile groups from the flexuous primary axis, hypocrateriform red corollas with tubes ca. 10 mm long, and 4-locular fruits. It was reported by Ståhl (1999) from only three specimens from the mountains of central Ecuador, where very little native vegetation remains and this species may no longer survive. Gonzalagunia mollis is similar to Gonzalagunia dependens, which differs in its densely interwoven lanose pubescence; Ståhl (1999) noted that Gonzalagunia mollis was also separated by its red corollas, but some plants of Gonzalagunia dependens are also described as having red corollas. The corollas of Gonzalagunia mollis are larger than those of Gonzalagunia dependens plants from Ecuador, but similar in size to those of some Peruvian plants of Gonzalagunia dependens.
