Description
Tree 6-12 m tall; branchlets puberulous with erect trichomes when young, glabrate, longitudinally ridged. Leaves alternate, narrowly obovate, 34-60 cm long, 9-18 cm wide, abruptly acuminate to caudate acuminate (cuspidate in type), the base narrowly cuneate to attenuate, thin coriaceous, entire, drying brown below from the pubescence, darker brownish gray above, main veins impressed above and raised below, tertiary venation plane above, prominulous below, above sparsely and glabrescently puberulous over the surface and densely and persis- tently pubescent on midvein; below strongly and persistently brownish puberu- lous throughout, the trichomes concentrated along the veins and veinlets; petiole 2-3 cm long, thick, grooved adaxially, puberulous. Inflorescences arising from the axils of the uppermost leaves, puberulous, openly paniculate, the flowers congested and sessile on contracted short third order branches, more or less fasciculate. Flowers with buds cream, drying blackish; sepals apparently 6, broadly ovate to obtusely subtriangular, the apex acutish, ca. 2 mm long, pub- erulous. Fruits obovoid-globose, 2.3-2.5 cmi long, 1.8-2.2 cm in diam.

Note
It is apparently restricted to premontane wet forest. Meliosma schlimii is distinctive among Panamanian species on account of the large leaves which are persistently softly pubesent below. Meliosma maxima Standley & Steyermark of Guatemala known only from the type, and a second sheet from the type locality is perhaps inadequately sep- arated by its abruptly rounded leaf base, inconspicuously puberulous young branches, and reduced indumentum of the leaf undersurface. Meliosma grandi- folia (Liebm.) Urb., of southern Mexico to Nicaragua is also closely related but has smaller more abruptly cuneate leaves and slender merely puberulous twigs.
