Subspecific Physalis pubescens var. hygrophila (Mart.) Dun.

Synonym Physalis hygrophila Mart., Flora, Beibl. 24(2): 86-7. 1841. TYPE: Brazil, Martius 624 (MO).
Description The var. hygrophila differs from typical P. pubescens principally in the corolla lacking a conspicuous eye. The anthers may be blue or yellow. In specimens examined, including the type, leaves are smaller than many collections of the typical variety but are well within the range displayed by var. pubescens in Panama and elsewhere.
Distribution The var. hygrophila is known from scattered collections from Mexico, Panama, and Brazil.
Specimen DARIEN: Vicinity of El Real, 15 m, Allen 956 (F, MO). 1 mi. N of Rio Sabana, Tyson et al. 4803 (SCZ; the specimen at MO with this number is P. cordata Mill.).
