Nomenclature:

Celtis australis L., Sp. Pl. 1043 (1753); Boiss., Fl. Orient. 4: 1156 (1879).

  Type: Described from S. Europe and N. Africa, Herb. Linn. no. 1209.2 (LINN).

Common name:

European Nettle Tree; מַיש דרומי

Habitat:

Mostly planted, rarely spontaneous in rocky terrain. Upper Galilee, Mt. Carmel, Samaria, Philistean Plain, Judean Mts., Golan, Gilead, Moav, Edom. Rare.

Area distribution:

Mediterranean.

Notes:

     Very aged specimens of this tree are encountered among the forests of Quercus ithaburensis in the Gilead. Hundreds fruit stones were found atIron Age Tel Rehov and a few fruit stones at some other archaeological sites, likewise a few wood fragments at Tel Rehov and Tel Jezreel (Esdraelon Plain) [Goren-Inbar et al. 20002; Simchoni & Kislev 2011].

Tree up to 15 m. Leaves 4-10 x 2-5 cm., ovate to ovate-lanceolate, obliquely cordate at base, long-acuminate, serrate, scabrous-pubescent. Flowers small, greenish. Fruit a globular, glabrous, blackish drupe, about 1 cm. in diam., borne on a long pedicel. Fl. April - May.
