Species PHENAX MEXICANUS Wedd.

Description Shrub, 2-6 m. high, glabrous throughout except occasionally on the under side of the leaf nerves and veins; leaves ovate-lanceolate, up to 15 cm. long and 5 cm. wide, acuminate, narrowed at base, crenate-serrate except toward base, membranous or subcoriaceous, the petioles up to 5 cm. long, usually much shorter; plants monoecious; achenes about 0.8 mm. long.

Distribution Southern Mexico to western Panama
Elevation more than 800 meters.
Specimen CHIRIQUI: El Boquete, Maxon 4995, Pittier 288I, Davidson 452; Finca Lerida to Penia Blanca, Woodson & Schery 3I2; valley of the upper Rio Chiriqui Viejo, P. White 340.
Note A related species, P. hirtus (Sw.) Wedd., a common plant of the tropics, apparently has not yet been collected in Panama.
