Lianas; ramitas subteretes to weakly quadrangular, the youngest quadrangular to flattened, 3–7 mm de ancho, ramitas jóvenes lepidote and con tricomas sparse, minute trichomes, translucent. Hojas elíptico to obovadas, 4.5—12 cm de largo y 2—7.5 cm de ancho, ápice rounded to agudo, or shortly acuminate, base cuneada, sparsely pubescent to glabrous, cartáceas a membranáceas; pecíolo lepidote and con tricomas sparse, minute trichomes, translucent. Inflorescencia cimas axilares, 1.5--7 cm de largo y 1.5--3 cm de ancho, cimas lax con pocas flores (3--6), pedúnculo 0.5--4 cm de largo, lepidote and con tricomas sparse, minute trichomes, translucent to glabrous, pedicelo 1--10 mm de largo, pedicelo y cáliz lepidote and con tricomas sparse, minute trichomes, translucent to glabrous; cáliz 6--13 mm de largo y 4—7 mm de ancho, ápice 4-dentate; corola con tubo 9--20 mm de largo, lobos 8--10 mm de largo. Fruto globoso, 25--35 mm de largo y ancho, ápice deprimido o redondeado, glabro; cáliz fructífero cupuliforme, woody, 20 mm de largo y 30--40 mm de ancho, ápice 4-lobed, verrugoso.
Known in Nicaragua from one collection (Luna 225), Mun. El Castillo, Rio San Juan, 60 m; Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The Nicaraguan collection has old inflorescences and calices.
