general taxon notes:

Barbula is stated to contain about 200 species, probably far fewer, with a worldwide distribution; about 20 species in the Neotropics. The status of many of the “endemic” or reported Barbula species recorded for the tropical Andes are unknown. In Bolivia three species are presently recorded. Generally found in open premontane to high montane, páramo and puna, often associated with disturbed sites in the tropical Andes; on soil and rock. A world revision is very much needed for this genus The genus can be confused with Didymodon, however, Barbula generally exhibits an apex that ends frequently in an apiculus of one to few cells. The laminal cells exhibit distinct papillae that obscure the cell lumen and readily observable along the leaf margin. Hyophiladelphus agrarius (Hedw.) R.H. Zander may be found in the Bolivian Amazon ecoregion, it is known from the state of Acre in Brazil; this species, previously placed in Barbula, is distinguished by the spathulate leaves, adaxially bulging and abaxially flat upper laminal cells that are not papillose; and sharply excurrent costa.
