Discussion: The genus is distinguished from Trichostomum mainly by the absence of a peristomial basal membrane.

Plants small to medium-sized, caespitose. Stems rounded-pentagonal in section. Leaves lanceolate to oblong, narrowly to broadly acute, sharply and smoothly mucronate; margins plane, often irregularly notched-sinuate; costa shortly excurrent, with a differentiated ventral epidermis and 2 stereid bands; upper cells rounded-quadrate, with low papillae that are sometimes fused together; basal cells differentiated across the leaf, rectangular, thin- or thick-walled. Perichaetia terminal. Setae elongate; capsules cylindric; annulus variously developed; operculum conic to rostrate; peristome teeth 16, straight, subulate, entire or irregularly cleft, without a basal membrane.
