The genus consists of six species in the world (Crosby et al. 2000), mostly occurring in high mountain regions. Four species are found in China.

8. Plagiobryum Lindb.   平蒴藓属   ping shuo xian shu

Plants small, in dense tufts. Stems simple or sparsely, irregularly branched, with rhizoids at base. Leaves usually imbricate, rounded-ovate to oblong-ovate; margins plane, entire; costae ending in the apex or nearly percurrent; median leaf cells lax, thin-walled, hexagonal, becoming narrower near margins, but borders not differentiated; basal cells lax. Dioicous. Setae short, straight or curved; capsules club-shaped to pyriform, curved, neck elongate, mouth oblique; stomata present; opercula low conic; annuli differentiated; peristome double; exostome teeth linear-lanceolate, papillose; endostome segments linear, perforate; basal membrane rather high; cilia rudimentary or absent. Calyptrae cucullate, naked. Spores spherical, densely papillose.
