Plants medium-sized, densely caespitose. Stems erect, central strand present, tomentose below; rhizoids reddish brown, branched, finely papillose. Leaves larger and more crowded above, erect-spreading when moist, decurrent, lanceolate, lingulate or ovate; apex acute, acuminate or obtuse; margins toothed or entire, plane above, recurved below; costa single, subpercurrent, or excurrent. Autoicous or dioicous. Setae single or multiple, straight or twisted, mammillose or smooth. Capsules erect, urn short-cylindrical, brown; hypophysis elongate, broader or of same diameter as the urn, longitudinally ridged, folded; stomata present; columella exserted or not at maturity; peristome single, peristome teeth 8, 16, or 32, recurved when dry or more or less erect. Calyptrae connate, mitrate, constricted at base, smooth or hairy.
