Discussion:

Tayloria is a complex genus presently divided into five subgenera. The genus is heterogeneous and there is so much variation present within Tayloria that it is difficult to characterize. The subgenera, however, are internally united and separated from one another by a suite of peristome, capsule (hypophysis and exothecial cell form), and spore characters. In addition, because they are found on different substrates and in different regions of the world generic recognition of the subgenera should be considered (see A. Koponen 1982, 1983).

Tayloria chiapensis Crum has recently been collected in Costa Rica (San José: Holz & Schäfer-Verwimp CR99-1054 (GOET, MO); it is otherwise known only from Mexico. Tayloria chiapensis differs from T. scabriseta in having coarsely and irregularly dentate upper leaf margins and awned leaves with excurrent costae.
