Plants small, gregarious or in mats. Stems erect, unbranched, hyalodermis present, all cortical cells enlarged and thin-walled, central strand weakly developed; rhizoids sparsely scattered on stem. Axillary hair cells all hyaline. Leaves oblong, oblong-lingulate, or oblong-spathulate, twisted and contorted when dry, spreading when wet, rounded to emarginate bluntly apiculate; lamina unistratose; margins with a narrow, red, multistratose border of stereid cells ending just before the apex; costa slender, subpercurrent to percurrent, ventral surface cells elongate, guide cells and single (dorsal) stereid band well-developed, ventral surface layer enlarged; leaf cells smooth and thin-walled, upper cells hexagonal to short-rectangular, basal cells long-rectangular. Dioicous. Setae long, red-brown. Capsules cylindrical, erect, smooth; stomata in neck; opercula erect, long-rostrate; annuli persistent; peristome teeth 32, erect to weakly twisted, basal membrane low. Spores spherical, lightly papillose. Calyptrae cucullate.
