Chlor. Melvill. 38. 1823. Pohlia calophylla (R. Brown) Schwaegr., Sp. Musc. Frond. 75. 1830. Type: Canada.

 

Plants relatively small, to 15 mm high, brownish green, in loose tufts. Stems branched. Leaves loosely imbricate when dry, erect-spreading when moist, large, often forming rosettes at apex, concave, ovate to broadly ovate; margins plane below, narrowly recurved, denticulate above, indistinctly bordered by 1–2 rows of narrower, thick-walled cells; costae near yellowish to brownish, percurrent or ending below the apex; median leaf cells rhombic to hexagonal, 40–70 µm × 15–30 µm; basal cells rectangular. Autoicous. Setae to 30 mm long; capsules pendulous, ellipsoidal to narrowly obovoid; opercula rostrate; cilia absent. Spores 26–40 µm in diameter.
