The type was collected by Herzog from Challa (Department of La Paz). This species was described by Brotherus (in Herzog, 1916), and accepted in the taxonomic treatment by Ochi (1980). Bryum challaense is characterized by the white coloration of the plants, imbricate, ovate, broadly acuminate leaves, plane and entire margins, percurrent to shortly excurrent costa, subquadrate basal cells, and bulbous axillary gemmae. The more notable character emphasized by Ochi (1980) was the cordate leaf base.
