Ecology. High open Yungas montane forest and shrubby humid puna; on soil and humus. Elevation. 3140-4155 m. Distribution. Bolivia: La Paz. World range: Mexico, Central America, tropical Andes; also Africa.

Bryum leptotorquescens is typically a large plant, to 7 cm, tomentose below, evenly and closely space, often weakly rostulate at apex, oblong acuminate leaves to 4.5 mm long with a decurrent base, distal margins rather sharply serrate, indistinctly bordered by 2-4(6?) rows of elongate cells, porose and thick-walled rhomboidal-hexagonal upper laminal cells, rectangular basal cells, seta to 20 mm long, pendulous capsules to 4 mm long, and conic-apiculate operculum.
 
Bryum leptotorquescens típicamente es una planta grande, hasta 7 cm, tomentosa en la porción basal, uniformemente y estrechamente espaciada, a menudo débilmente rosulada en el ápice, hojas oblongas acuminadas, hasta 4.5 mm de largo, con la base decurrente, márgenes distales marcadamente serrados, indistintamente bordeados por 2-4(6?) filas de células alargadas, porosas y con paredes gruesas, células superiores de la lámina romboidal-hexagonales, células basales rectangulares, setas hasta 20 mm de largo, cápsulas péndulas hasta 4 mm de largo y opérculo cónico-apiculado.
