Ecology. Open Yungas montane and humid puna; exposed habitats, on soil, humus, leaf litter, rocks, shrubs and trunk and branches of trees. Elevation. 2400-5200 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Cochabamba, La Paz, Santa Cruz. World range: Central America, Andes, and southeast Brazil; also Africa.
 
Ecología. Montano abierto de Yungas y puna húmeda; en hábitats expuestos, sobre suelo, humus, hojarasca, rocas, arbustos, tronco y ramas de árboles. Altitud. 2400-5200 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Cochabamba, La Paz y Santa Cruz. Distribución mundial: Centro América, los Andes y sureste de Brasil; también África.
 
The high sheathing oblong leaf base often gives the plants a slender, wiry appearance. Leptodontium ferrugineum Broth. and L. vaginatum Herzog are synonyms; the former was collected by Knoche from Aguila (Department of La Paz), and the latter collected by Herzog from two localities, Comarapa (Department of Santa Cruz) chosen as the lectotype, and the other from Tablas (Department of Cochabamba).
 
La base de la hoja envainadora oblonga alta a menudo brinda a las plantas una apariencia delgada y alambrina. Leptodontium ferrugineum Broth. y L. vaginatum Herzog son sinónimos; la primera fue colectada por Knoche en Aguila (departamento de La Paz), y la segunda fue colectada Herzog en dos localidades, Comarapa (departamento de Santa Cruz) escogida como lectotipo, y Tablas (departamento de Cochabamba).
