Plants slender, small to medium-sized, 5–20 mm high, in loose tufts. Stems loosely foliate except at apex. Leaves twisted when dry, spreading when moist, distinctly concave; margins plane or slightly recurved above, entire, somewhat decurrent at base; upper leaves ovate to lanceolate, bluntly acute or acute, lower leaves broadly ovate, obtuse or acute at apex; costae ending below the apex or percurrent; median leaf cells rhombic, 29–47 µm × 11–24 µm; upper cells more or less quadrate or rhombic to hexagonal; basal cells mostly quadrate; marginal cells differentiated by 2–5 rows of narrower cells. Dioicous. Setae to 20 mm long; capsules obovoid-pyriform.
