Plants medium-sized, ca. 15 mm high, yellowish green, slightly pale reddish to reddish brown, not glossy, in loose or dense tufts. Stems erect, branched by innovations, with gemmae often present on rhizoids. Leaves appressed when dry, slightly twisted, erect-spreading when moist, 0.8–1.2 mm long, triangular-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate or cordate; margins entire or serrulate above, recurved nearly throughout, shortly acuminate; costae percurrent or shortly excurrent, often reddish at base; median leaf cells oblong-hexagonal to linear-rhomboidal, 42–84 µm × 8–15 µm, somewhat thick-walled; marginal cells narrower, but borders not differentiated; basal cells rectangular, sometimes nearly quadrate close to margins. Gemmae spherical, reddish, rarely yellowish or orange, without stalks, plane on the surface, 100–155 µm in diameter. Dioicous or rarely autoicous. Setae ca. 10–25 mm long, yellowish to reddish or dark purple; capsules club-shaped to ovoid-pyriform, ca. 1.2–2.0 mm long, pendulous; neck short; opercula semi-spherical, shortly apiculate; exostome teeth minutely papillose; endostome segments widely perforate; cilia present, nodose. Spores 8–14(–20) µm in diameter.
