Plants medium-sized, 10–30 mm high, twisted when dry, in loose tufts. Stems erect, branched at base. Leaves dense and larger above, sparse and smaller below, not clearly keeled, oblong-ligulate, obovate or spathulate, acuminate, ca. 2.5–6.0 mm long; margins recurved in lower 2/3 of leaf length, entire, serrulate at apex, bordered by 3–4 rows of narrower, pale yellowish and thick-walled cells; costae excurrent, ending in long awns; median leaf cells elongate-rhombic to hexagonal, 56–90 µm × 18–26 µm, thin-walled; basal cells rectangular. Dioicous. Setae up to 20 mm long; capsules shortly club-shaped; peristome double, exostome teeth and endostome segments well developed; basal membrane high; cilia 2, appendiculate. Spores spherical, 12–20 µm in diameter, papillose.
