Notes:

Ecology: Open or forested montane to páramo and humid puna; submerged to emergent in or along streams and waterfalls, on rocks and soil covered rocks. Elevation: 900-4500 m (Venezuela: 2610-3500 m, Colombia: 2200-4000 m, Ecuador: 2615-4100 m, Peru: 2600-4450 m, Bolivia: 1200-4500 m, Argentina: 900-2100 m). Distribution: Mexico, Central America (Costa Rica), Venezuela to Argentina, southeast Brazil; Australia and New Zealand.
 
Fissidens rigidulus is the commonly encountered aquatic species of the genus in the tropical Andes. This species is characterized by the dark green leafy stems to 8 cm, lanceolate leaves to 4.5 mm, acute apex, thickly bordered (to 3-stratose), entire leaf margins, vaginant laminae ca. 1/2 the leaf length, percurrent costa, and thick-walled, uni- to 3-stratose laminal cells.
 
Fissidens rigidulus es una especie acuática del género frecuentemente hallada en los Andes tropicales. Esta especie se caracteriza por los tallos con hojas verde oscuras hasta 8 cm, hojas lanceoladas hasta 4.5 mm, ápices agudos, bordeados gruesamente (hasta estratos), márgenes de la hoja enteros, lámina vaginante ca. 1/2 del largo de la hoja, costa percurrente y células de la lámina con paredes gruesas, en uno a tres estratos.
