Plants small, yellowish green to brownish, growing in lax tufts. Leafy stems erect, simple; fertile stems 3.3–4.5 mm long, ca. 0.75 mm wide; axillary hyaline nodules indistinct, not well developed; central strand not differentiated. Leaves densely arranged, the lowest leaves very small, scale-like; upper leaves subulate-lanceolate, ca. 1–3 mm × 0.25 mm; vaginant laminae 1/2–2/3 the leaf length; costa stout, usually shortly excurrent, subulate; base of dorsal laminae wedge-shaped; margins crenulate to nearly entire; cells of apical and dorsal laminae subquadrate to shortly rectangular, 6–12 µm long, more or less thick-walled, smooth; cells of vaginant laminae similar to those of apical and dorsal laminae, but larger; limbidia found only on vaginant laminae, composed of 1–3 rows of cells. Dioicous or rhizautoicous. Male plants much smaller than female plants, 0.8–0.9 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide. Perichaetial leaves lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, ca. 1.6 mm long, vaginant laminae often indistinct. Archegonia terminal, ca. 200–300 µm long. Setae short, only 0.4–0.8 mm long, smooth; capsules erect, cylindrical, symmetrical, often immersed in upper leaves (rarely exserted above leaves with setae as long as 3 mm); urns 0.7–0.8 mm long; opercula shortly rostrate, ca. 0.35 mm long; peristome teeth spirally thickened above. Calyptrae campanulate, 0.7 mm long. Spores 28–38 µm in diameter.
