Fissidens hornschuchii is distinguished by the oblong leaves, broadly acute apex, ending in a clear sharp cells, serrulate margins above, border confined to the vaginant laminae (extending from base to 1/2-2/3), subpercurrent (1-2 cells below apex) to percurrent, and firm-walled, unipapillose (rarely bipapillose) laminal cells. Fissidens constrictus Müll. Hal. is a synonym. This species was named for Christian Friedrich Hornschuch (1793-1850), German botanist who contributed the mosses for Martius' Flora Brasiliensis.
Fissidens hornschuchii se distingue por las hojas oblongas, ápice anchamente agudos, terminando en una célula afilada y clara, márgenes serrulados distalmente, borde confinado a la lámina vaginante (extendiéndose desde la base hasta 1/2-2/3), costa subpercurrente (1-2 células por debajo del ápice) a percurrente, células de la lámina unipapilosas (raras veces bipapillosas) y con paredes firmes.
