Discussion:

Although T. lilliputanum is cleistocarpous it has a rudimentary, non-functional annulus. The exothecial cells in this species are remarkably thin-walled. The presence of cleistocarpous capsules in T. lilliputanum separates it from all other members of Tortella except T. fruchartii (C. Müll.) Zand.

The basal leaf margins in the Panamanian collection of  Tortella lilliputanum have only a weakly developed v-shaped pattern and overall its gametophytes look very much like those of Trichostomum brachydontium. The species seems better placed in Trichostomum, but until both genera are revised the transfer of the species into Trichostomum is pointless.
