Discussion:

Plaubelia sprengelii var. stomatodonta grades into var. sprengelii in nearly all its features. Although leaf shape can usually be relied upon to separate the varieties, there are some collections of both varieties that exhibit a full array of leaf shapes. Likewise the ornamentation difference on the dorsal surface of the upper leaf cells is not always clear-cut since nearly all collections of var. sprengelii have some degree of papillosity on the dorsal surface of their leaf cells.

Crum (1965) and Zander (1983) lectotypified Hyophila stomatodonta with Pringle 15227, although Crum on error gave the collection number as 17227.

Illustrations: Bartram (1949, Fig. 61 C–E, as Desmatodon spathulifolius); Zander (1983, Figs. 1–6); Sharp et al. (1994, Fig. 199 e–g). Figure 60.
Habitat: On limestone, moist calcareous rocks by spring, and rocks or stones in forest; 680–1582 m.
Distribution in Central America: GUATEMALA. Huehuetenango: Sharp 5245 (F). HONDURAS. Copán: Allen 17700 (MO, TEFH). COSTA RICA. Guanacaste: McQueen 5061 (MO).
World Range: Southwestern U.S.A.; Mexico; Central America; Caribbean, Brazil.
