Trees, all parts stellately hairy. Leaves ovate or suborbicular, entire or lobed, palmi-nerved. Inflorescence terminal, long panicle or flowers axillary, solitary. Flowers unisexual and bisexual on the same plant. Epicalyx segments 4-6, accrescent and stellately spreading in fruit, persistent. Sepals 5, fused to or below the middle. Petals 5. Male flower: Staminal tube 5(-6) branched at the top, each with 3-5 sessile anthers grouped into a head. Ovary rudimentary, globose. Female flower: Staminal tube 5 branched, each with a sterile anther. Carpels 3; ovary (2-) 3(-4) loculed, each 2 ovuled, one usually abortive; style branches 3, each with peltate stigma. Fruit woody, loculicidally dehiscent capsule, subglobose, usually 3-celled, 3-valved. subtended by epicalyx segments. Seeds generally 1 in each cell, reniform, brown-black.
