General/Distribution: 10 species, native to tropical America. Introduced or naturalised elsewhere. Represented in Pakistan by 2 species, each with several cultivars.

Annual or perennial herbs with entire leaves. Flowers solitary axillary or in clusters of up to 3. Calyx shallowly 5-toothed, campanulate. Corolla rotate, 5-lobed. Stamens 5; anthers bluish, dehiscence longitudinal. Ovary usually bilocular. Fruit a many-seeded, ± dry indehiscent inflated berry variously coloured. Seeds compressed, smooth or not.
