Distribution     (Last Modified On 11/26/2014)
Generic distribution and diversity: More than 180 species, predominantly in the Old World; 131 species in Malesia. (From: Zhu et al. 2012.)

Species status     (Last Modified On 11/26/2014)
Taxonomic notes: The tropical Asian representatives of the genus are regarded to be extremely difficult taxonomically. The flowers and fruits are small and often shed from herbarium specimens. There are only a few diagnostic characters available for delineating the species and the majority of the characters used are quantitative features of the vegetative organs such as leaves, stipules, and bracts. (From: Zhu et al. 2012.)
