66. Paspalidium Stapf
About 30 species, Asia, Africa, Australia.
Paspalidium is an intriguing Old World genus that traditionally has
been thought to be an offshoot of Panicum. More recently, Webster (1995)
has shown that it is more closely related to Setaria and may represent a
specialized subgroup of that genus. Some Australian species have the spikelets
subtended by bristles, thus the two genera differ primarily in structural
details of their inflorescences (Webster, 1988, 1995).
