Note Herbaceous or low suifrutescent plants usually with odd-pinnate leaves, toothed leaflets, and stipules more or less adnate to the petioles. Flowers in spikes or racemes, apetalous, the sepals and stamens variable in number (usually 4); pistil usually 1 with short terminal style and multifid stigma, at maturity forming an achene wholly inclosed in the prickly hypanthium.
