Reference(s):
Family or Genus Distribution: not endemic to the Malagasy Region
Generic Species Diversity and Endemism Status: has been evaluated
No. of species in Fl. Madagasc.: 2 indigenous non-endemic
Accepted Published Species: 2 (1 endemic, 1 indigenous non-endemic)
Estimated Unpublished Species: 1 endemic
Estimated Total Species: 3 (2 endemic, 1 indigenous non-endemic)
Species Level Data Entry: complete
Notes: This account is based on the monograph by Manktelow, although she did not study the Malagasy spp in detail, and further work is clearly needed. In addition to the 2 species treated here for Madagascar, an single Boivin specimen is known of P. dorsiflora, a species known from Reunion, but it is assumed that this is a labelling error since Boivin also collected the sp in Reunion. A Comorean sp, P. verticillaris is also known from a single doubtful specimen from Madagascar. A specimen of P. imbricata annoted by Manktelow 'unusually tiny specimen' from Marojejy, appears distinct in other ways, and we believe this represents an undescribed sp.
