Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Stems heteromorphic or homomorphic, branched or unbranched. Leaves simple, sessile, opposite, whorled or alternate. Inflorescence terminal, of bracteate racemes, spikes, panicles or rarely flowers solitary. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate or sessile. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, lobes equal or unequal. Corolla limb bilabiate, upper lip 2-lobed; lower lip 3-lobed; spur conical, linear or filiform, usually arsenate straight or curved. Stamens 4, 2 fertile, 2 sterile, didynamous, included, staminodes minute. Style simple or bifid, stigma capitate, clavate or linear. Capsule oblong, ovoid or globose, many seeded. Seeds ovoid, oblong, reniform, trigonous, tetrahedral or discoid and winged. 

A genus of about 150 species, distributed in Europe, Asia and N. Africa; introduced and naturalized in temperate regions of the World. Represented in Pakistan by 12 species.
