Description Terrestrial or epiphytic herbs with very short stems. Leaves duplicative, coriaceous, sulcate above and carinate below, inarticulate. Inflorescence terminal, racemose or paniculate, several-flowered; flowers medium to large-sized, resupinate. Sepals spreading, the dorsal free, the laterals connate almost to their apices. Petals narrower than the sepals but often much elongated and caudate. Lip calceiform, saccate. Column short. Fertile anthers 2, the third stamen (staminodium) sterile, stigma deflexed from the apex of the column, subparallel to the ovary or subrotund, papillose. Capsule long-fusiform, trilocular, the perianth deciduous.
Note Two. species in Panama and about a dozen species in South America. Often in cultivation.
