Notes:
This genus was studied by Rusham & Davis (2007), who separated 6 species of shrubs and small trees. Flagenium is characterized by its generally persistent triangular stipules, axillary or supra-axillary inflorescences that are shortly cymose to subcapitate, 5-merous flowers, small to medium-sized corollas with the lobes left-contorted, berry-like fruits with several to numerous seeds that have the testa "tightly ribbed" and the endosperm entire, and usually dark brown drying color. Ruhsam & Davis (2007) distinguished the species of this genus in several cases based primarily on vegetative characters. Several species of Flagenium are known only from their types, which lack locality information.
