General/Distribution: A genus with over 300 species distributed mainly in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.

Herbs, undershrubs or shrubs. Leaf mostly imparipinnate, leaflets rarely 3-1, generally more; entire, exstipellate; stipules of various types. Inflorescence a terminal or leaf-opposed raceme or flowers in the axils of the upper leaves. Bract present, bracteoles absent. Calyx teeth or lobes subequal or the upper two united. Vexillum pilose externally. Wings slightly adherent to the keel. Stamens 10, monadelphous or diadelphous, then the vexillary stamen quite free, anthers uniform. Ovary sessile, generally many ovuled, style incurved, glabrous or pilose, stigma nude or penicillate. Fruit compressed, linear, 2-valved, continuous or obscurely septate between the seeds.
