General/Distribution: About 70 species mainly in SE Asia; a few in the Himalayas and southern tropical Africa. Pogostemon and "Dysophylla"* (Eusteralis) have usually been recognized as independent, allied genera: the former having leaves in opposite pairs and with plants usually of dry places; the latter with leaves in whorls of 3 or more and plants of wet places. The extremes are most different in facies - as, indeed, our 2 species are - but as Press (1982) has shown there are so many intermediates when a global review is undertaken that the union of the genera is a realistic treatment. Keng (1977) recognized the two taxa as sections of Pogostemon: sect. Pogostemon and sect. Eusteralis (Rafin.) Keng.
