General/Distribution: Species 30-40, mainly Mediterreanean; also Europe, Africa and W. Asia. Represented in Pakistan by 2 species.

Annual, biennial or perennial prostrate or erect herbs with hairy parts; hairs stiff and arising from a swollen base. Leaves usually lanceolate, entire or not. Inflorescence a terminal cyme, ± elongating in fruit. Flowers reddish-purple or white to blue (in our species), bracteate, regular or slightly irregular. Throat scales well developed. Corolla infundibuliform to hypocrateriform, the tube curved in irregular flowers. Stamens subsessile, attached ± at the middle of tube or reaching the throat scales. Style included, stigma capitate. Nutlets 4, erect to suberect, rugulose, tuberculate, basal ring ± thick and rugulose.
