General/Distribution: A large genus of 80 to 90 north temperate and arctic species found in both the eastern and the western hemispheres. 2 or 3 species have been reported from W. Pakistan.

Perennial. Leaves petiolate, pinnately or terna-pinnately compound; leaf bases sheathing, broad, inflated. Involucre of a few linear bracts or lacking. Rays 10 to numerous. Involucel of linear bractlets. Flowers white. Calyx teeth lacking or minute. Carpophore divided to the base. Fruit elliptic, oblong to subquadrate; dorsally compressed; lateral ridges broadly winged, not closely appressed at the margins; furrows 1-many-vittate. Inner seed face plane to concave.
