Perennial or biennial, spiny or spineless herbs or ± shrubs  with alternate, usually dentate-pinnatisect to spinose-pinnatisect, usually decurrent or semi-amplexicaul simple leaves. Capitula homogamous, solitary, corymbose  or variously grouped, discoid. Phyllaries imbricate, ± stiff, outer with reflexed apical spines, inner with a large, membranous, red, pink, purple or yellow coloured appendages. Receptacle flat, beset with scarious twisted glabrous bristles. Florets all tubular, bisexual. Corolla actinomorphic, red, purple, pink or yellow, tube cylindrical, limb 5-lobed. Anthers with pinnate-fimbriate basal appendages, borne on free, glabrous filaments. Cypselas obovoid-obpyramidate, ± compressed, narrowly 4-winged, glabrous, with inconspicuous rim at the truncate apices. Pappus of short, scabrous, free, caducous bristles or occasionally absent.

Cousinia Cass. is the third largest genus in the Asteraceae, the largest in the tribe Cardueae with ca 500 species, mainly distributed from East Mediterranean region to Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Western Himalayas (Kashmir, Western India). It is represented in our flora by ca 44 species.
