Notes:
The only species known to occur in Madagascar outside of cultivation is M. quinquenervia, which is naturalized along the east coast and escarpment at low and medium elevation. The species has been much confused with M. leucadendra. and M. viridiflora. Other species, mostly red-flowered are cultivated as ornamentals, some of these species have been placed in a related genus Callistemon., which differs from Melaleuca only by having free stamens, rather than stamens joined together in bundles.
