(Boyle, 1945)

Seventy‑five to 90 species, nearly worldwide, in temperate regions, but absent from Australia.

Melica is unusual among grasses in that the spikelets of different species groups disarticulate either at the spikelet base (below the glumes) or between the florets (above the glumes).
