General/Distribution: Two clearly distinct species: one native to NW India; the other native to NE Africa and SW Arabia and cultivated in the Indian subcontinent.

Shrubs, aromatic, with a tomentose or floccose indumentum of dendroid eglandular and glandular hairs. Stems much branched, above rather densely leafy. Leaves not divided, petiolate, rugulose, finely crenulate. Inflorescence of many terminal and lateral flowering shoots; verticillasters many-flowered, distant from each other or condensed into spikes. Bracts shorter or longer than calyces. Calyx bilabiate, tubular, somewhat longer in fruit; upper lip subentire with 2-3 closely connivent teeth; lower lip with 2 distinct teeth; tube within scattered pilose. Corollas small, white, bilabiate; upper lip bifid or entire; lower lip ± equally 3-lobed; tube straight, annulate or not. Stamens 2, exserted or included; thecae bilocular, clearly exserted or scarcely so, glabrous, separated or not by a short connective; staminodes 2 present or absent. Style equally bifid at apex. Nutlets obovoid or oblong, smooth, apically rounded or acute, mucilaginous or wetting or not.
