Annual or perennial herbs with hispid parts. Leaves simple, alternate. Inflorescence a terminal scorpioid cyme, bracteate. Flowers heterostylic. Calyx 5 partite, accrescent Corolla usually salverform, white, yellow or shade of blue; lobes imbricate, spreading, throat glabrous. Stamens 5; anthers included or slightly exserted. Style gynobasic, exserted or included. Stigma simple or bifid. Ovary 4-lobed. Nutlets 4, variously ornamented.
