Dwarf shrubs. Stems branched, with numerous bud-like branches. Leaves opposite, scale-like with rudimentary blades connate at base. Bracts early deciduous, opposite, free, con¬cave. Flowers hermaphrodite, usually in clusters of 3, not connate; clusters forming lateral and terminal, short and dense, oblong-globular to oblong spike-like inflorescences. Perianth free, of 3 segments, white or brownish, inflexed at tip. Stamen 1, with ovoid anther and somewhat flattened filament. Ovary ovoid; style thick; stigmas 2, subulate. Fruit obovoid-compressed, tapering; pericarp membranous and often ruptured irregularely. Seeds vertical, with perisperm; embryo arcuate.
